I'm sure that many of you have heard the booms and felt the vibrations that have been occurring in the 1:30-2:00pm timeframe on a daily basis. For those who are wondering or unaware of the source, Landmark Construction is conducting blasting activities on North Eagleville Road in the area of the Public Safety Complex. The blasting will continue for approximately six more weeks. Below is a link to the notification that was posted in the Daily Digest on February 9th, 2026.
Hello TLS Colleagues, Please be advised that a strong burning odor is present near room 270 on the second-floor west end of Torrey. The issue originated from an electrical problem in Cold Room 276. The Fire Department and EH&S have inspected and cleared the area, and it is now safe for use. Please note that the odor may persist for several days, potentially a week or longer.
Apologies for the inconvenience and we appreciate your patience during the system outage!

Hi Cheryl,
I still don’t understand the high temperatures in my insectary and whether someone set higher temps or there is an airflow malfunction. Carlos Garcia Robledo’s lab has also gotten warmer. My lab and office are fine.
I’m going to swing by with Gamt building manager Mike.
I’ll bring a thermometer.

All currently open/accessible areas as you see them currently are to remain so for the foreseeable future/duration of
Please note that the elevator will receive a pressure testing today at 1pm. OTIS will be onsite to perform this maintenance task. The test will last a half hour.
Please let me know if this interferes with your day and in what way.
Please take a moment to review the message below from UConn Facilities Operations.
Buildings will remain protected and monitored by existing fire safety systems during this time frame. In the event of an alarm activation, normal evacuation procedures must be followed. Fire panels inside the buildings may sound a local tone alarm for the duration of this work.
Please take note that the Torrey elevator will be offline for 3 days, this week, Thursday, Friday into Saturday. The elevator will be painted, no laughing.
Hello TLS Colleagues, Please be advised that the elevator lobby on the ground floor will have limited access this Thursday, July 31, and Friday, Aug 1st. During this time, the concrete floor will be painted in sections, so please exercise caution to avoid stepping on wet paint. Additionally, the hallway and interior of the elevator will be marked with directional signs to guide you safely around the area if needed. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
We are planning to apply a fresh coat of paint inside the elevator carriage and would like to schedule the work for a 24-hour period between July 30th and August 8th.
Please let me know if there is a specific day within that timeframe that absolutely will not work for you, along with the reasons.
Please note that the second-floor ice maker in TLS has been taken offline for maintenance. It will be down until July 9th. There is a icemaker on the first floor near room 108.
We have received a handful of reports that some people are being denied card access to areas where they have normally been allowed. A system update was performed over the weekend that is causing these issues and a solution is actively in the works. Please continue to share your occurrences so we can pass them along to Facilities for expedited attention.
Please find the BEC Notice regarding the upcoming annual ATS testing. Kindly note that TLS will experience a brief power outage—affecting both emergency and normal power—on May 27th from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. While this test typically goes unnoticed, it is advisable to prepare by refraining from activities that could be adversely impacted by the temporary power interruption.
The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) arrived at our Main Accumulation Area this morning unannounced for a hazardous waste inspection. The inspectors will likely also be heading to multiple labs and work areas on campus today and over the next few days to assess the management of hazardous wastes in your labs or work areas.
As every year, in conjunction with UConn graduation and Mother’s Day, we will be conducting our annual campus-wide steam shutdown. Please plan accordingly by adjusting your autoclave schedules and apparel preparations for the upcoming week.
JCI will be conducting the Fire alarm system Annual Full Functional testing/Inspections for Torrey Life Sciences. This consists of accessing all areas of the building for all devices on the Life Safety fire alarm systems.
Horns and strobes will be activated.
Audibles can be done early morning and is scheduled for May 5th-7th, 2025.
I wanted to inform you that the exterior doors of Torrey will be locked tomorrow due to the OOZBALL tournament happening across the street behind the North Campus dorms, known as "The Jungle."
In previous years, we’ve experienced issues with students entering the building and using the emergency showers to clean up after the game, which has led to significant complications for the facility.
Please be aware that the first floor ice machine has been taken offline for a maintenance issue and will also be cleaned while down. In the meantime there is an ice machine in the second floor elevator lobby in TLS. I will keep you posted when it is back online.
The Torrey elevator is officially back in service again. This last repair included the replacement of a substantial component that had been difficult to acquire.

I am pleased to inform you that Hocon has confirmed the usage of propane in Torrey Laboratory. As we move forward, I kindly remind everyone to prioritize safety and practice responsible gas usage in your respective laboratories.
I would like to express my gratitude to those who provided feedback on their average propane usage for the TLS labs and classrooms. Following this, we proceeded to have the tanks filled. However, today during the pressurization of the system by Hocon, it was discovered that there may be open gas turrets in the building or a potential leak, as the system is unable to maintain pressure.
ANNUAL STEAM SHUTDOWN NOTICE: May 5th - May 9th, 2024 Please be advised that the annual steam shutdown is scheduled to take place from May 5th at 12:00 am to May 9th at 11:30 pm in 2024. We kindly ask that you plan your research activities accordingly based on your previous experiences with this event. Additionally, we recommend preparing for the shutdown by dressing warmly in layers to ensure your comfort during this period.
We are taking a survey to determine who still uses propane gas in Torey Life Sciences.
Please inform us only if you use the gas and approximately how much per week or month. Feel free to provide your usage in a different format if needed.
Thank you for your time and attention to this request.
Please take note that the elevator in Torrey will be out of service tomorrow from 9-10am for a remediating repair. Feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns.

I have an update from Physical Security to share with you.
The Genetec vendor will be arriving on site tomorrow at 10am. If all goes well with the firmware update, reprogramming and reconfiguring a few things we could have the doors operating within a few hours. However, if there are further unforeseen issues found once they start their work, they will let us know the extent of the areas that may become affected and provide a resolution timeframe.
Please be aware that all ground floor Genetec access is currently offline. Physical Security is currently troubleshooting the issue. If Access is needed please call or text me at 860.208.1023. Please accept our apology for this inconvenience.
Please see included BEC Notice informing you of a scheduled hot water shutdown in Torrey for this Monday the 26th, starting 7am. The shutdown is scheduled to last 5 hours. Please reach out with any questions or concerns.
The Torrey elevator will be offline for maintenance tomorrow morning for approximately one hour, 8a-9a. Please plan your morning accordingly. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
See included BEC Notice. There will be a scheduled 4.5-hour (could be less) heat and hot water interruption On Tuesday February 20th, starting at 7:30am. Technicians will work as quickly as possible. This will affect autoclave use in TLS so please plan ahead.
Feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns.
Please take note that there is an emergency water shutdown in TLS started at 10am, the repair is estimated to take 2 hours. I will update when the job is finished.
There are issues with Air Handlers on the west side of the building causing a lack of heat. HVAC is aware of and currently addressing the issue. Thank you for your continued patience and love for this ol' building.
Please note that the Torrey elevator is temporarily out of service. OTIS is currently working on the car. They are projecting a few hours, hopefully back online by 10:45am.
Good news to share. The Beta Star and STERIS in TLS 217 are both back online with no amines. Autoclave A in 211 is operating as it should also without amines.
Autoclave B in 211 is still offline, scheduled to be back online Dec 14th . Moving forward autoclave B will be posted as a 'waste only' unit as it will have amines in the sterilization chamber.
Please be aware that UConn Electrical shop are replacing the old florescent lighting with LED fixtures in TLS common areas. They are currently working on the 4th floor. There may be some low-level noise as they remove the old fixtures and portions of the hallway will have the power isolated for safety purposes.
Over the next several weeks, Facilities will be replacing the existing hallway lighting in Torrey with new LED fixtures. The work should not be disruptive to daily building operations but if a challenge does arise please reach out to us for assistance.
Sincerely,
Brett DeMarchi University of Connecticut Director CLAS Facility Services C: 959-444-6264
Unfortunately, the RO is still down. Facilities and an outside vendor are experiencing part acquisition issues. Please continue to use the surrounding science buildings for RO needs. If you do not have any direct contact to RO elsewhere, please let me know and I will connect you with a source.
Please take note that the TLS RO system is down. There is a very limited supply available at this time. Please fill carboys in either Gant, BPB or PBB. No projected repair timeframe as of yet. I will update as soon as I am able.
As of this morning, the electronic locks in TLS remain down. Facilities is on task to remedy this issue. Please leave your spaces propped open while you are at work and be sure to secure your spaces when you leave for the day.
A new list serv will go out when the issues are corrected.
Quick reminder that TLS will have NO power at all tomorrow at 7am for the ATS Test. The test has the potential to last one hour for each switch (there are 2 total) each switch being tested one at a time. However, in all likelihood, each switch will take 30 minutes or less. Please power down computers and sensitive equipment, be sure to monitor your fume hoods and freezers once the test is completed.
I wanted to touch base with all of you regarding the 2023 Annual Automatic Transfer Switch PM for the emergency power for buildings fed from either the CUP or a stand-alone generator.
Most of the buildings WILL NOT LOSE NORMAL POWER during this PM unless the entire building is on emergency power. The Life safety emergency circuits like emergency lights/exit lights will be impacted. These life safety emergency circuits will lose power for approximately 1 hour with no emergency power backup from the generator/CUP. Some buildings do have department equipment on emergency power so please plan accordingly.
Please be aware of the upcoming campus-wide annual steam shutdown. For many buildings, the shutdown will affect the heat, hot water, and of course steam. Autoclaves will be down as well. Please plan accordingly concerning work-related tasks and your personal comfort during the week. Please reach out with any questions or concerns.
Quick note to let everyone know that Torrey elevator will be out of commission tomorrow morning for approximately 1-hour or less, 8a-9a. Please reach out if you have any conflicts with this quick maintenance belt replacement.
TLS is experiencing chronic unlocked doors on 4th floor, specifically. I have spoken with C&W; they are assuring me they are communicating this issue with their TLS staff. This is occurring on different doors on 4th floor. I have been checking doors each morning locking several I locked the morning before. I will be on vacation starting tomorrow through the 21st. Please take responsibility for checking your own spaces and please feel free to contact the police if you find anything missing or you are getting the sense of misconduct concerning your spaces.
Please take note of the campus wide holiday building access schedule that was included in today's 11am UConn Daily Digest.

Hopes are the repair will occur over second shift today, however it may be into tomorrow. Domestic hot water will not be affected. Please reach out with any questions or concerns concerning this matter.
RO water has been restored to the building. One leg of the system on the 2nd floor West Wing will be kept isolate for a few more days to accommodate the current renovation project in 281. If you have questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out. Thank you for your patience.
The buildings RO water has been temporarily shut down due to an emergency valve repair in the system. The water is expected to be out at least through tomorrow 6/4/20. We will update with a more specific timeframe as soon as possible. Our apologies for any inconveniences this may cause and please reach out with any questions concerning this matter.
Please be aware UConn Facilities will be in Torrey this coming week doing preventive maintenance on all building air handlers and exhaust units. Filters and belts will be inspected and replaced at this time. The work will continue throughout the week and will be done on 2nd shift to minimize any impact to building occupants. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me anytime.
As part of our continuing plan to increase building security in Torrey Life Sciences, Facilities Locksmith Shop will re-key ALL exterior entrance doors to TLS within the next two weeks. This will render all previously issued keys ineffective. While it is not mandatory, if anyone wishes to return a key for recycling after the transition it can be left in the key drop in the door in TLS163. Moving forward all building access will strictly be via the card readers with a University issued ID card, no new keys will be handed out. Those receiving this email
We expect an increased focus on cleaning and sterilization efforts from individuals during daily routines as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. We ask that you do not spray cleaning products directly onto any of the electronic locks in the building. This can cause damage to the sensitive electronics resulting in extremely expensive repairs.
The RO System in Torrey is temporarily out of service, there is no RO water available at this time. Evoquoa, our systems service contractor, will be at the facility tomorrow May 19th, to troubleshoot the issue . We hope to have the RO back up and running as soon as possible and avoid any inconveniences as we begin to venture back to work in the coming weeks. We will reach out again when the system is back online. Thank you for your understanding and please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have
Dear Torrey Life Science faculty, staff, and researchers,
I have just been informed by the project manager of the cooling tower replacement project that UCFD has required the building be left vacant during the operation of a crane this Wednesday, May 6th between 7am and 1pm. Entry for approved activities may commence after that timeframe. We apologize for the inconvenience and short notice. Please let Cheryl or I know if you have any questions or concerns.
Due to unforeseen malfunctions with the crane delivered to campus, Facilities has not be able to complete the originally scheduled work. Facilities' contractor is working on getting a replacement crane to campus as soon as possible. In the interest of public safety, we therefore have to extend entry restrictions until further notice. If you need to enter the building for approved activities please contact me so that I can work with you and public safety to minimize any potential risks. Thank you all for your patience and understanding.
Contractors are currently vacating the area. Pre-approved activities in TLS may resume. Thank you all for your patience and cooperation.
Respectfully,
Ray

I hope this email finds you and your families safe and healthy.
I would like to bring to your attention the upcoming scheduled UConn IT Network and Data Cable Upgrade in TLS.
Information Technology Services (ITS) is replacing end-of-life network equipment. This refresh will improve stability and performance of the data network in your building.
Following further guidance from the Governor and University to further reduce the presence of staff on campus, CLAS Facility Services will suspend this week's on-campus coverage schedule that I emailed last week. I know that this may cause some frustration and confusion, but we hope you understand that the current circumstances have led us to make this difficult decision. Managers will be working from home until further notice, please continue to email or phone them with any questions or concerns. Facilities Operations will be monitoring buildings systems.
Beginning Monday, March 23rd, CLAS Facility Services will be functioning with one on-campus representative to support continuing activities in CLAS buildings. The managers and I will be maintaining our regularly scheduled hours (8am-4pm) from home on the other days (Monday through Friday). If you need general assistance feel free to contact your designated building manager, but for a quicker response to on-campus needs, please reference the schedule below:
Please see included BEC Notice. TLS RO System will be shutdown tomorrow, January 22nd from 3am-7am., to allow the hook-up of an RO faucet on the ground floor. Please let me know if this presents an issue for anyone.
Please be aware ground floor Torrey Women's Bathroom will be temporarily closed starting 12:30 today Friday 1/10/20 through Sunday 1/12/20. Please let me know if this presents an issue for anyone. Thank you for your patience.
Please take note of the included BEC notification concerning upcoming shutdown scheduled in TLS Tues. 1/7/20 and Wed. 1/8/20. The buildings main compressor will be replaced at this time. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this shutdown please feel free to contact me, Ray Hebert or Steve Werth.
Torrey elevator will be out of service today for an hour 11am-12. OTIS is replacing the contacts that energize the new pump motor. We apologize for the short notice and any inconvenience it may cause. This ounce of prevention will keep from needing pounds later.
It's been a tough week for everyone in Torrey with the elevator out of service. It looks as though the original repair date will hold pretty true to a week. OTIS will be onsite Monday to begin repairs. They estimate to be complete within two days however, the elevator will need to be inspected and approved by state inspectors before it can be put back into service. We are very hopeful to have the elevator back in use sometime late Wednesday. Thank you for your continued patience. As always, please feel free to ask if you have further
I would like to make everyone aware of the upcoming renovation in Torrey 284 & 286. The current autoclaves and glassware washer will no longer reside there and will be taken off line November 1st. Torrey has 3 autoclaves and 2 glass washers in rooms 211 & 217 that are available to the buildings occupants. Please keep in mind MCB teaching staff utilize the sterilizers heavily until 3pm a few days each week. If access is needed to the rooms, please reach out with a request to [log in to unmask]
I Would like to let you all know the elevator in TLS is out of service for the time being. OTIS, elevator contractor, and Facilities Operations are working to get the elevator restored. At this time the extent of the problem is unknown. Stay tuned for updates through Listserv.
The RO water in TLS will be shutdown for the time being today due to a line breakage. Facilities is on hand addressing the issue. Our apologies for any inconvenience this may cause. You will be kept updated throughout the day.
We have been working with the Lock Shop to correct an issue with the lock system in Torrey, predominantly happening on the first floor. It appears that a faulty communication device is causing the locks to sporadically lose their connection to the system. This has been happening off and on for a few days and may be the cause of recent issues people have been having with accessing spaces. Please know that at this time the locks are reconnecting to the system within a few seconds, so if you are having trouble with accessing a door (it blinks
There will be a 4 hour Electrical Shutdown in Torrey Life Sciences Wednesday Sept., 25th 12am-4am. This will allow for a service update in the main panel ground floor west wing. Due to unforeseen circumstances, Evoqua (RO system installers) is unable to be in Torrey today. They have rescheduled the new system installation for this Thursday the 19th. The buildings RO will now be unavailable the 19th & 20th. If you have any questions or concerns about this change, please call or text me.
We have isolated the recent Reverse Osmosis (RO) cross connection issue in Torrey, a domestic hot water valve was briefly introduced to the RO system through a glassware washer on the second floor.
CLAS and Facilities Operations have had a plan in motion for the past several months to replace the buildings RO System and the time has come. Evoqua will be installing the new RO system next Tuesday, Sept. 17th. RO will be unavailable to the building on the 17th & 18th. Once the new system is up and running, lines purged and sanitized it will be
Over the past few days, Facilities has been attending to various reported concerns with the propane system in the building. At this time, the propane in TLS has been shut off until required testing of the gas lines can be completed. Facilities is planning to troubleshoot over the weekend and perform the final test with UCFD early Monday morning, at which time they hope to restore gas to the building.
CLAS has been made aware of a cross connection in the RO system. Facilities believes there is a piece of equipment in the building that is connected to both the building water system (hot water specifically) and the RO feed. They believe the equipment is malfunctioning and pulling building water through the RO system.
We hope that you have had an enjoyable summer and are getting excited for the start of a new semester. As you are preparing for new academic and research activities, we want to make you aware of a recent change to the process for providing access to your spaces.

These checks are part of a campus-wide code compliance program and a critical way for The University to meet the health and safety needs of students and researchers.
I would like to let Torrey occupants know that all of the bathroom floors are to be revitalized starting this Wednesday the 24th. All floors will be stripped, re-grouted and sealed. Sani-Glaze will close the bathrooms one floor at a time, starting on the 4th floor. I've been informed that the bathrooms will be reopened the following day.
