Python has indeed seen a resurgence in usage. At least, if you follow Kaggle
competitions

As far as data visualizations go, I can't really say much about Python -
But R's data visualizations have always left me frustrated. It has infinite
flexibility - and infinite hassle. So building the visualization you want
is more work than I ever have had time for.

Our company uses both depending on the need. We use R for our static
dataviz and quick exploratory analysis. For that it is hard to beat.
Neither R or Python is going anywhere anytime soon and both serve different
needs with some overlap. I would recommend using both depending on the need.

Hi Everyone,

Actually, I don't know whether it is the right place to send this email. Sorry to bother others.

I am a graduate student at UCONN, from China. My oral English is not very good. I need some help to improve my English.
Although I can communicate using English, however, it still has lots of problems. So I need help from Native English speakers. One problem for me is the lack of environment to communicate using English, since most of my friends are Chinese.

PROBLEM with the 4-point scale used on the "AERA Requests Feedback about the 2015 Annual Meeting"

Question for research and measurement experts,

Are any of you concerned about the unbalanced 4-point rating scale being
used by the AERA to evaluate the recent annual conference? Here is the
unbalanced scale they are using:

1=dissatisfied
2=somewhat satisfied
3=satisfied
4=very satisfied.

It seems pretty convenient and unfair to have 3 of 4 responses indicating
satisfaction and only one indicating dissatisfaction in my professional
opinion.

Perhaps pointing out how the unbalanced scale makes people think that the
association lacks competence, an area where educational professionals have
a real problem, will cause them to reconsider. We do live an era that has a
great er concern about image rather than substance after all.

The problem with many balanced scales is that when evaluating events or people or objects raters tend to stick to the positive end of the scale. This is a particular bias in raters, especially untrained ones. When 70% or more of the responses are on a positive end then differentiation suffers. There are 2 ways to deal with this, either expand the scale to more levels, which may just give you a large number of levels not endorsed (the negative ones), or make the scale unbalanced. The latter method is more efficient. And by spreading out so many positive responses

Exactly. If the purpose is to equalize the numbers in each grouping, the
question is a bad one That end can be done in coding. Using the unbalanced
form that would seem to decrease the number of unfavorable responses to
force that end strikes me as poor design.

The purpose is to spread people out on a continuum. If all the responses are occurring in just a few categories, then the balanced scale fails. This has been a known problem in the scaling literature for years. In bff balanced scales make good sense when a substantial number of the responses are on the positive side of the scale.

That might be true Paul, but using a biased scale is not the solution. The
solution is to add to the number of categories on the scale for finer
discrimination.

Sorry, but I disagree. What is the use of a 6 or 7 point scale where half of the values are rarely used. Consider the following distribution of responses on a six point scale.

Strongly disagree. 1
Disagree. 5
Slightly disagree. 50
Slightly agree. 100
Agree. 500
Strongly agree. 344

Wouldn't you rather know about the variation in 500 agrees the 56 who disagreed?

Please note that my objective is to determine the *degree *to which
participants are satisfied or dissatisfied with the current object of
evaluation (the conference). (If I only cared about satisfied vs.
dissatisfied I could use a dichotomous scale, but that is not my interest.)
Also, I do not know *a priori* what the responses will be because that is
an *empirical question*; neither does the AERA know (for this year's
conference) despite what might have occurred multiple years ago. (Check out
David Hume's problem of induction.) Next, a survey or marketing or

Hello Burke

Scale C is a ‘no brainer’. Scale A is ludicrous, Scale B nearly so (you need that middle option to capture those who have no strong opinion one way or another).

In my opinion, using an unbalanced response scale is nothing more than seeking to a priori bias the responses by inhibiting plausible response options.

Yup. C IS a no brainer. As supported by a voluminous literature and standard survey texts, many authors would be AERA members.
It is important to consider the PSYCHOLOGY behind how people use these scales.
It is assumed that people, respondents, have an underlying continuous sale of satisfaction and they make responses according to criteria they attach to the verbal labels in the options.
Respondents like to see a full range of options even though they only use 1. Scales with a neutral are highly desirable, because respondents like to have that option. As many have noted asymmetry of options

I think it's important to consider the larger context too. What are they
using the scale for? Sometimes we make a big fuss about measurement and
scales, and it just probably doesn't make any practical difference one way
or another. (That is, changing the scale to something else wouldn't make
any decision makers change their decision rule). If that's the case, then
using whatever scale you had last year might make more sense, because you
can compare scales across historical rates, which may have more practical
value than changing the scale so that it more accurately reflects some
other property

ATTITUDES TOWARD STANDARDIZED TESTING: HUMAN SUBJECTS WANTED

You are invited to participate in a study investigating the perceptions and
attitudes about standardized test taking ability.

I am looking for adults over the age of 18 who have a taken a standardized
test for college, graduate or professional school admissions to participate
in this study. This one-time survey will take approximately 5-10 minutes of
your time. Your participation will be anonymous and you will not be
contacted again in the future. The purpose of this study is to validate an
instrument designed to measure adults’ attitudes about their ability to
perform well on standardized tests.

What I have noticed is that more and more folks are posting requests on
the internet for "volunteers" to participate in some kind of a research
study (usually a survey). To me this is not a good way to define and
obtain a sample ... though it appears to be a fairly easy one. My
question is ... let's say the researcher gets n=87 to respond .... WHAT
IS THE POPULATION

This is a self-selected survey and the results do not necessarily reflect
the population. I would certainly not trust any conclusions drawn based on
this study.

issues with this "invitation to volunteers", (1) don't volunteer and (2)

appropriate place to have these conversations. In fact, I think this is as
perfect venue to have serious discussions about the validity of

Just a general comment on non-representative sample. Years ago and Old
Professor said a good start if you want to know what fish are in a pond is
to throw out a big net and look at a lot of fish. While any estimates of
the proportions of different types will be flawed, you may learn enough to
serve your purpose and help design a more sophisticated survey. Some
questions about what kind of people favor what kind of test questions
could in some degree be answered by a self selected sample.

Perhaps this is not an either/or question (the results either do generalize
or they do not). Are the thousands of experiments (including the strong
designs with random assignment) based on random samples? That is rarely, if
ever, the case. Can any conclusions be made about people based on
experiments? I think the answer is yes, especially when we see a similar
result across experiments in different ecological settings with different
kinds of people. Have any good theoretical generalizations come from
research not based on random samples? Think about Piaget. Could the study
discussed here be viewed as *one* study needing

Personally, seems like this is a perfect list to raise issues about
methodology .... done in a civil way of course.

My original post dealt NOT with random samples ... but more specifically
... what is the population of interest of the researcher making the
"volunteer" request and, whether this online request for volunteers is
the way to go about obtaining that sample from the target population of
interest.

Perhaps the person collecting the data is a student learning about how to
design measurement instruments, or piloting a measurement instrument. It's
hard to learn how to do this, or to test it, without doing it, and going to
the effort and expense of getting a random sample to find that the
questionnaire was flawed would be a waste of time and resources. Might as
well try it out on a group that's easy to get hold of, and iron out the
flaws that way. I encourage my students to use their Facebook friends as
samples, because you can tell
