Notes from a presentation on 12/17 by MA DMF

Alex Boeri (MA-DMF Aquaculture Specialist) reported that there were 5 Campylobacter outbreaks and 19 illnesses associated with the consumption of oysters this summer, resulting in at least two closures. The University of Southern Mississippi’s (USM) Thad Cochran Marine Aquaculture Center (TCMAC) has launched the Marine Aquaculture Demonstration Initiative for Economic Development. The project is funded by Gov. Tate Reeves through the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act (GOMESA).

The initiative is designed to accelerate innovation, workforce development and sustainable practices in marine aquaculture—driving long-term economic resilience and food security across the Gulf Coast. Sudden, sporadic spikes in mortality of commercial oyster crops in spring and summer are a longstanding problem in the industry, across the US and globally.

While the causes of many of these events are clear (sudden steep changes in salinity, disease, heat waves, etc.), there appears to be an increasing number of unexplained high mortality events that occur 1) suddenly (over a matter of weeks) in the 2) spring/summer that are 3) unusual (mortalities of 70% or more in a crop) and 4) unexplained by obvious causes. The NAA is pointing out how changes to the wind and tropical storm protection element of the RMA policy are worth a second look. RMA put together a 6 minute explainer video and they are re-examining their oyster prices for loss estimations.

I would appear that sizable payouts are possible even if the storm hits the neighboring county...

I have only been able to fine one study from New Zealand and one from Puget Sound.

I suspect some towns out there must have collected data?

I have been asked if anyone is aware of states that have outsourced or sub-contracted permitting responsibilities to non-state employees to help speed up the process and get caught up with permitting backlogs?

I know that some states employ outside contractors to do water quality testing and HAB analysis or bacteriological analyses (especially since the FDA makes it very difficult to get state labs certified). I have also heard of states contracting site survey work to environmental firms. Certainly, many states hire outside legal counsel to help with legal issues that

Does anyone know where to buy the large jet sleds? 71x44x16 dimensions- the shapell magnum is out of stock everywhere or people are unwilling to ship. Does anyone know where to get a sturdy plastic tub like this? It’s made out of petroleum products, seems like we could make that here in the USA. It’s been really difficult (expensive) to have them shipped in the past. Where do they make things like this?

I hope everyone had a good holiday and spent quality time with family and friends.

I am happy to share some good news. We spent much of the last two months dealing with proposed new regulations for aquaculture regarding marine mammals. The ECSGA and NAA voiced strong opposition to proposals that would have listed certain types of shellfish aquaculture as Category II "fisheries". We were relieved to see we have all been listed as Category III which carries fewer requirements and restrictions.

Facts are coming out about another Campylobacter illness outbreak on Cape Cod.

Four individuals were diagnosed (two with confirmed Campylobacter illness, two unconfirmed) - all were eating together at a restaurant, all consumed oysters.

The authority closed the harvest area and instituted a recall of all product harvested from the that harvest area from the 1st thru the 18th of July.

Folks,

I was really hopeful that the Campylobacter illness outbreak that we had in 2001 was a freak incident, but now we have another outbreak up in Maine.

We need to redouble our efforts on bird deterrents and I would strongly recommend submerging any product that may have been exposed to guano for a week at depth to allow the oyster to purge themselves prior to harvest. If you can hold your product away from where the birds are perching - and at depths of 3' or more they should purge bacteria

Interesting paper by researchers at UNC suggests that oysters in bottom gear are more likely to have pathogenic Vibrio than oysters reared in floating gear.

We know that floating gear has advantages in terms of management and survival. We also know that some resource managers are suggesting that we hold oysters raised in floating gear at depth to allow them to purge pathogens they may have picked up from bird guano exposure. Hot off the presses.... the EPA has just released a new document that addresses issues relating to how we classify waters that have been impacted by non-human sources of fecal material. Years of research have gone into this work with a comprehensive literature review on the subject and strong recommendations on how to evaluate risk with guidance on regulating bathing safety and discussions on the use of water quality indicator bacteria that have been developed for waters impacted by human waste in waters that are only impacted by animal waste.

This past August we had over 47 articles and TV spots on "Flesheating" bacteria following three fatalities in Long Island Sound caused by wound infections from the bacteria Vibrio vulnificus.

All of the articles mentioned oysters and referred to information on the CDC website and the result was a collapse of oyster markets in New England (despite the fat that we have never had a New England oyster implicated in a V. vulnificus illness.

Recently several members have gotten caught up in HUGE lawsuits by predatory lawyers who ordered product and then sued the company that sent them shellfish. If you are shipping to California you essentially need to tag your product with special warning labels saying "this may kill you" or you expose your firm to huge multi-hundred thousand dollar lawsuits!

the FSMA Rule 204 Traceabilty regulations go into effect January of 2025.

Shellfish did get an exemption from the Rule, however some members are reporting that their buyers are mandating that their shellfish suppliers must adopt these requirements anyway.
